Steinbach Arenas Get Ready for Busy Season

The ice went in last week at the Centennial Arena in Steinbach, and Parks staff finished painting the logos on the ice this week. The T.G. Smith Arena ice will be completed within the next couple of weeks.

While the creation of the ice surfaces is always an exciting time for hockey, ringette and skating enthusiasts, the installation of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in each of the arenas is also welcome news. An AED is a portable electronic device that can be attached to someone who is suffering a heart attack. The AED automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation in a patient and, if necessary, will administer a shock to reestablish an effective heart rhythm. Statistics show that when an AED is used immediately together with CPR, chances of survival increase by about 75 percent over just doing CPR alone.

The AEDs were installed in the lobbies of the arenas earlier this week. The City wishes to thank the Steinbach Legion for providing funding for one of the AEDs earlier this year.

Sod Turned for Landfill Expansion Project

A sod-turning ceremony took place today to mark the start of Steinbachs Class 1 Solid Waste Disposal Ground Development project. Mayor Chris Goertzen was joined by Councillor Michael Zwaagstra, Chris Wiebe of Wiebe Investments, the contractor for Phase 1 of the project, and Solid Waste Department Head, Eldon Wallman, in marking the commencement of this large-scale project.

The goal of Council is to equip our city with infrastructure for the long-term and projects such as the Landfill expansion are integral to keeping our city progressive and operating efficiently, said Mayor Goertzen.

Our Solid Waste Department has been looking forward to this day for two years, said Wallman. It has been greatly anticipated and we look forward to offering all the patrons of our landfill a first-class facility for the next twenty years.

Steinbachs Class 1 Solid Waste Disposal Ground Development project consists of two phases. The first phase involves the development of a new solid waste collection site, while the second phase involves the decommissioning of the old active landfill site on the same lot at a total estimated cost of $3.5 million. Waste diversion programs that will benefit from the expansion include wood chipping, composting, and metal, tires, used oil, and white goods diversion and recycling programs.

The first phase of this project is expected to be completed by the end of November 2010.

The City has owned and operated a solid waste landfill site at its present location since 1956. Use of this site was provided to surrounding municipalities in 1995 as their smaller landfill sites were closed down and decommissioned. Steinbach currently accepts solid waste from four municipalities, which results in the collection of 27,500 tonnes of waste annually. This site services a population base of 35,000 people in southeastern Manitoba and is one of only 13 Class 1 solid waste disposal sites in the province.

Today was a special day for nine kids, ages 5-12, from the Steinbach Arts Councils Summer Arts Day Camp entitled, Discover Why and How. The group made their way over to the City of Steinbachs water tower and water treatment facility this morning where Waterworks Department Head, Mike Heppner provided them with a first-hand look at where their water comes from and how it is treated for their use. Heppner explained various aspects of the City's water system, including how the water tower holds 450,000 gallons of water and is154 feet tall. When he asked if any of the kids knew why there was a light on top, ayoung girl quickly answered correctly, so that airplanes see it at night! Heppner said, It was encouraging to see the kids interest in being water stewards, which includes small things like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth. The kids faces and questions during the tour showed their interest and excitement about the new things they were learning.
