There are many reasons why it's a great time to do business in Steinbach!

  • Economic Overview

Steinbach is one of the fastest growing cities in Manitoba with a vibrant business community and a wealth of locally generated economic activity.  As the hub of economic activities in southeastern Manitoba, Steinbach is the regional shopping and service centre and agriculture supply centre for a large area.  The retail trading area serves approximately 50,000 people.

Business owners in Steinbach enjoy the benefits of both a large consumer base and a strong local economy.  People from surrounding communities as well as those who live in the area like to take advantage of the City's shops and services... plus, Steinbach's population continues to grow!  For this reason, merchants are privileged to enjoy the business of diverse customer groups.  All of these factors provide for rapid and long-term economic growth.

Steinbach's dedication to excellence is invaluable when it comes to our industrial sector.  Given our large, available workforce, and the benefit of a strong work ethic in the community, success in manufacturing and processing operations is guaranteed.  This success is further assured by favourable tax rates, close proximity to several markets, and access to reliable shipping and transportation.  For all of these reasons and more, many companies have chosen Steinbach to either begin or continue their success in national and international markets.

    License Information

Steinbach is privileged to be home to many different types of business activities. As a result, the City has developed a number of licenses to aid in the successful development and regulation of these enterprises.

    Amusement Device

Every amusement device must have a license if there are more than two operated at one establishment. Amusement devices include billiard tables, slot machines, foosball tables, air hockey tables, pinball machines, electronic games, batting cages, shooting games, and mechanical grab machines.

Procedure:  Every person desiring an amusement device license must submit a written application to the City Of Steinbach. This application requests general information about the applicant and about the proposed location for the device. Before any amusement device license can be issued, the City will make inspection of the premises. This license must be renewed annually on or before January 31.

Fees:  Each amusement device requires a $15.00 annual license fee to a maximum of twenty (20) per location.

For more information, call 204.346.6515 or e-mail jdoerksen@steinbach.ca.

    Arcade

An arcade is any business that operates three (3) or more amusement devices. Amusement devices include billiard tables, slot machines, foosball tables, air hockey tables, pinball machines, electronic games, batting cages, shooting games and mechanical grab machines. The maximum number of amusement devices allowed in any location is twenty (20). Hours of operation are not allowed between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., Monday to Saturday and are restricted to between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Procedure:  A conditional use permit must be obtained from the City prior to an amusement device license being issued.

In order to obtain an amusement device license, the applicant must fill out an application form and provide a diagram with dimensions of the premises. The diagram must show the location of each amusement device and each exit from the premises. A copy of the conditional use permit and letter of authorization of the property owner is also required. This application is available in person or by mail, e-mail, or fax.

After the application is submitted, the Building Inspector and/or the Fire Department will inspect the business location for amusement device placement to insure that they will not cause a nuisance or danger. When all inspections have been successfully completed, the City will issue the amusement device license to the applicant for a term expiring on December 31 of that year. This license must be renewed on an annual basis.

Fees:  Upon issuance of the license, a license fee of $10.00, plus $15.00 for each amusement device to be located on the premises is required.

For more information, call 204.346.6515 or e-mail jdoerksen@steinbach.ca.

    Home Occupations

Home occupation is the operation of a business/service from the home or accessory building that is incidental to the primary residential use of the premises.  A home occupation allows for incidental business to take place in the home under criteria established by City bylaw. Home businesses must be in keeping with the general residential character of the neighborhood by avoiding excessive traffic generation, parking problems, noise, or other impacts.

Additional regulations that apply to home occupations include:

Business must be conducted solely by the members of the family residing in the same dwelling without the employment of other persons.

Not more than 400 square feet or twenty-five percent (25%) of floor area, whichever is the lesser, may be devoted to home occupation in any dwelling.

There can not be more than one identification sign or bulletin board, which must not exceed two square feet in area, that is affixed flat against the wall of the main building or accessory building. The sign must not project higher than the eaves around the said building.

Procedure:  The procedure is the same as registering for a resident business license subject to the home occupation restrictions. In order to apply for a City business license you will need to fill out a registration form and remit the appropriate fee. This registration form is available in person or by mail, e-mail, or fax. The following information will be required:

    - common and legal name of business
    - street and mailing address of business
    - business, mobile and fax phone numbers
    - type of business
    - applicant's signature
