Mayor & Council Election Information

Interested in running for mayor or council?  
Here's what you need to know:









  • Election Information

    The City of Steinbach mayor and councillor election will be held on Wednesday, October 27th, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., at 55 Plus, 10 Chrysler Gate. More information regarding advance polls and mail-in ballots will follow. 

    The campaign and registration period begins on May 1st for Mayor candidates, and June 30th for Councillor candidates. Complete “Nomination Packages” are available for interested candidates at Steinbach City Hall, during regular business hours.


    You MAY run for mayor or council if you: 

  • Are a Canadian citizen
  • Are at least 18 years of age on Election Day
  • Are a resident of Manitoba
  • Are a qualified voter of the City of Steinbach (either resided or owned property in the City of Steinbach for at least six months); and
  • Have not been disqualified from running under The Municipal Act or any other Act. 


    You MAY NOT run for mayor or council if you: 

  • Are a judge of the Court of Queen s Bench or Court of Appeal
  • Are a provincial judge or justice of the peace
  • Are a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba or the Senate of House of Commons of Canada
  • Are a sitting member or are nominated for office in another municipality or school division
  • Are an employee of the municipality, unless you have applied for (and been granted) a leave of absence
  • Have been disqualified, for any of the following reasons: Have committed an election offence, and are barred from running in the municipal election; Have been convicted under The Municipal Act or any other Act and have not paid the fine imposed; Have been convicted of a fine punishable by imprisonment for five or more years; Have been convicted under The Criminal Code (Canada) under any of the following sections: 122 (breach of trust by public officer), 123 (municipal corruption), 124 (selling or purchasing office), or 125 (influencing or negotiating appointments or dealings in office); Cease to be qualified as a voter in the municipality; or Breach the requirement of confidentiality for a matter that is discussed at a council meeting closed to the public.


     
    Voter Information

    Door to Door Enumeration
    The City of Steinbach will be conducting a door-to-door enumeration in order to establish a voters list for the 2010 Municipal Election on October 27th.

    City of Steinbach residents are hereby notified that an enumerator will be visiting your residence during the months of May or June. All enumerators will wear City of Steinbach identification.


    Voter Eligibility
    In order to be eligible to vote in the election, a person must be:

    • A Canadian citizen;
    • At least 18 years of age on election day (October 27th); and
    • A resident of, or registered owner of land in, the City of Steinbach for at least six months on election day.

    Note that a student attending university or college outside of Steinbach, but who intends to return home after the term ends, is considered a resident voter.


    Important dates - Registration & Nomination

    May 1 - Sept 21:  Campaign period and candidate registration period for Mayor

    June 30 - Sept 21:  Campaign period and candidate registration period for Councillor

    Sept 15 - Sept 21:  Nomination papers accepted
    Mon-Fri 9am-4pm

    Sept 22:
      Candidates may withdraw nomination (in writing) if sufficient candidates remain

    Advance Poll - Date to be determined

    October 27:
      Election Day (55 Plus, 10 Chrysler Gate)

    Council Orientation Session - Date to be determined

    Inaugural Meeting - Date to be determined

    November 16: 
    First Regular Council Meeting


    Notice of Registration

    Prospective municipal election candidates must register with the Senior Election Official (SEO) during the registration period before they may begin to accept contributions, incur expenses, fundraise or borrow money for their campaign.

    NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that I will be receiving candidate registrations for:

    1) Mayor: Between May 1, 2010 and September 21, 2010

    2) Councillor: Between June 30, 2010 and September 21, 2010

    at Steinbach City Hall, 225 Reimer Avenue, Steinbach, Manitoba, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Monday to Friday).

    Nomination Packages

    Nomination Packages are available at Steinbach City Hall

    Packages include the following information:

    1. Notice of Registration
    2. City of Steinbach “Registration of Prospective Candidate” Form & Affidavit

    • Documents must be filed with SEO prior to any contributions being accepted or any money spent on your campaign.
    • To be filed with the SEO no later than September 21, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Monday to Friday).

    3. Notice of Nominations
    4. Nomination Form

    • Deadline for Nominations is Sept 21st at 4:00 p.m. Late Nominations cannot be accepted. 
    • Nominations should be filed in person. If necessary, other arrangements may be made with the SEO.
