The Community Garden is a volunteer project, begun in cooperation with The City of Steinbach and Steinbach and Area Garden Club. Community gardening is an activity for persons of all ages and abilities. A plot of land is provided to interested gardeners at a small cost to help cover set-up, tools etc. Gardeners have access to water, composting bins, tools and information at each garden site. Gardeners are encouraged to grow vegetables, herbs and flowering plants. It is each gardener’s responsibility to maintain their plot and surrounding areas. Good environmental gardening practices are encouraged. Surplus produce should be shared.

The following guidelines are meant to ensure the continuing success and prosperity of the Community Garden, not to restrict the participants. Welcome aboard!
1. Garden plot fee is $12 annually, payable with registration. A wait list will be maintained.
2. The plot sizes may vary but should be approximately 200 sq ft. Plots are to be marked with four corner stakes that remain in place during the season.
3. Members are required to weed and maintain their beds as well as adjoining paths or areas. If you are going to be away, please notify a friend to take care of your plot.
4. Members who are able, are asked to participate in maintaining common areas of the garden, and may be asked to participate in work projects when required.
5. Use of chemical pesticides/herbicides/fertilizers is discouraged.
8. Please consider adjacent plots when choosing plants, eg plants not more than 3 ft tall.
9. No animals are allowed inside the gardens. Children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
10. Water is provided and must be used with care. Please follow guidelines at the garden plot.
11. Tools are to be cleaned and returned to the storage shed and locked. Access to sheds and water will be arranged after registration.
11. Vandalism is to be reported to the garden contact person.
12. Plots need to be totally cleared at the end of the season.
13. Returning gardeners will be given the choice of returning to the same plot.
The garden plots are located on Elmdale Drive between Lumber and Barkman on City of Steinbach land.
To register for a plot fill out a registration form available at City of Steinbach, attach the $12 registration fee by cheque made out to Ernie Klassen and return both to the City of Steinbach offices. Click here to download a registration form.

Parties are always a highlight during the summer months. To help facilitate the fun safely, the City of Steinbach allows block parties on selected neighbourhood residential streets such as cul-de-sacs or non-through streets.
The person organizing the event must submit an application to the City at least two days in advance of the party date. The applicant is required to give their name, telephone number, address, desired location, date, and time of the proposed block party. If the location is approved, the resident will be furnished with sufficient approved traffic control barricades to restrict access at each street closure location. Block party requests are required at least two weeks in advance of the proposed date.
There are no application fees for block parties.
Residents may contact City Operations at (204) 346-6710 or by e-mail at ndyck@steinbach.ca.

The City of Steinbach strongly believes that City residents and City employees alike have a crucial role to play in keeping Steinbach an attractive and healthy community. This includes the creation and maintenance of green space in the City. For this reason, the City promotes the following Cost Sharing Programs.
All requests for the funding of boulevard tree projects must be made in writing to the City of Steinbach. A spokesperson should be designated by the neighbourhood to be the contact with the City throughout the project.
Requests must include a plan for the tree planting, including location of curbs and boulevards, public sidewalks, private approaches, underground structures, above-ground structures, overhead wires, proposed location of trees, proposed species and planting size of trees.
Council will review requests at such time as the overall budget is being considered for the following year.
Cost-Sharing Maximum: The City will consider up to a maximum of $5,000 per annual budget for purposes of boulevard tree projects, cost-shared 50/50 with the landowner or neighbourhood.
The City will issue tax-deductible receipts for donations made to a tree-planting project approved by the City. Payment of the landowner portion is due prior to ordering of the trees.

Cost-Sharing Maximum: The City will consider up to an additional $5,000 for development of an approved playground, providing there is a 50/50 matching contribution from the neighbourhood.
