Youth Recreational Hockey Program

Welcome to the City of Steinbach Youth Recreational Hockey Program!

Registration for the Winter 2026 season starts Friday, December 19th, 2025 at 8am, online only.

Our goal is to provide a recreational hockey program whose focus is to provide a non-competitive hockey environment for children ages 7-16 to participate in the game. The cost for the program is $90. 

Please note: this program is strictly for youth NOT participating in another hockey program, association or league

Equipment Requirements

Participants must have full Hockey Equipment, including:

  • Skates,
  • Shin Pads,
  • Socks,
  • Athletic Supporter,
  • Hockey Pants,
  • Hockey Gloves,
  • Stick,
  • Elbow pads,
  • Shoulder Pads,
  • Neck Guard,
  • Helmet with Full Cage,
  • Mouth Guard.

The above equipment is required to ensure the safety of the participants.  


Program Rules

  1. No Body Checking
  2. No Slap Shots
  3. Adherence to all Hockey Rules (i.e. tripping, hooking, slashing, etc).
  4. No Fighting
  5. No Profanity
  6. Participants are to respect their fellow participants. Bullying or disrespectful treatment of others will result in removal from the ice and/or program.

Winter 2026 Schedule

There are two Youth Recreational Hockey slots scheduled for this fall starting January 10th and ending on January 3rd. Depending on age and availability at registration, your child can be registered for one of the following: 

Ages 7-11
Maximum 30 participants | 3:30-4:30pm, T.G. Smith Arena
9 sessions: January 10, 17, 31; February 21, 28; March 7, 14, 21, 28

Ages 12-16
Maximum 30 participants | 4:45-5:45pm, T.G. Smith Arena
9 sessions: January 10, 17, 31; February 21, 28; March 7, 14, 21, 28


Structure

Each on ice session will include two parts:

  • Part 1: 10-15 minutes – Skill Development including skating drills, puck handling, shooting and team play.
  • Part 2: 45 minutes – Scrimmage/Play – Participants will be split into age-appropriate groups and game play will occur.

Volunteers

This program will not run without the assistance of volunteers. Please get involved in your child's activity. We will need on-ice volunteers for coaching, officiating, and organizing. Please keep in mind that all on ice volunteers will be required to wear helmets at all times.

Cancellations and Refunds

  1. The City of Steinbach will not provide a refund if an illness occurs or symptoms of an illness are present.
  2. Participants who are registered for Rec Hockey can withdraw 1 week prior to the start date, and will receive a full refund less the Administration Fee of $8 (Plus GST) and a Cancellation Fee of $20 (Plus GST).
  3. Cancellations made after the Youth Recreational Hockey program has started are not eligible for a refund.

How Do I Register?

Registration for the Winter 2026 season starts Friday, December 19th, 2025 at 8am, online only.

Everyone is required to set up an account online before registering for the program. This account can be used for all future recreation registrations with the City of Steinbach, including swimming lessons. There is no fee to use this service.

Note: If you have already created an account for programs at the Steinbach Aquatic Centre, you can use the same account to register for youth hockey.

Before registering:

  • Ensure you have all personal information ready to input once registration starts (i.e. birthdates, address, postal code, phone numbers, etc.).
  • Have your credit card (Visa or Mastercard) information available so that it can be easily entered during the registration process.
