As of December 8, 2022, Bristal Hauling will take over residential recycling collection service provision for the City, and residents will also see a shift to an automated cart-based system. Addresses that currently have curbside residential waste collection services provided will receive a recycling cart during the week before their new service begins.

“We’re really looking forward to this new service for the residents,” says Eldon Wallman, Solid Waste Manager with the City of Steinbach, “The automated cart-based system is very clean and efficient, and we hopefully won’t see as much recycling blowing around in the community on the windier days because each residence will now have a standardized cart for their use.”

Each recycling cart has a unique registration number and will be assigned to a specific property. If residents move, the cart must stay with the property. Residents are encouraged to take care of their new carts as the costs for broken or damaged or missing carts will be charged to the property due to negligence. Additional carts will be available for a fee of $120 per year. All carts will remain the property of the City of Steinbach.

Other blue boxes and bins, even those previously provided by the City, will no longer be serviced beginning December 8, 2022.

More information regarding the changes to the residential recycling collection program will be mailed to affected residents in late November. The City’s 2023 Garbage & Recycling Collection Schedule will be mailed to residents in December. The new service will not affect the current Garbage & Recycling Collection Schedule. Any changes to the Garbage & Recycling Collection Schedule will be announced on the City of Steinbach’s website and on the City of Steinbach’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts.

The City of Steinbach would like to thank Eastman Recycling Services for providing recycling collection services to the City for the past several years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do with my old blue bins/recycling bins?
The City’s updated residential curbside recycling collection services will make use of the new recycling carts, which means that other recycling bins, even those previously provided by the City, will no longer be serviced. The City recommends that residents keep any other recycling bins they may have for alternative waste-keeping or storage purposes. Residents can also bring old recycling bins to the landfill for proper disposal.

Can I opt out of the new recycling cart service?
The City’s updated residential curbside recycling collection services will make use of the new recycling carts, which means that residents who choose to opt out of receiving the recycling cart will no longer have their recycling collection picked up on collection days. Residents who wish to opt out of recycling can contact the landfill; please note that opting out of recycling does not affect their annual property taxes (i.e. waste collection fees will not be waived).

My cart broke! How do I get a replacement?
Residents are encouraged to take care of their new carts as the costs for broken or damaged or missing carts will be charged to the property due to negligence. Replacement carts can be paid for and picked up at the landfill for $120.

The brochure doesn’t mention #5 plastics under acceptable items… Is the City still recycling these?
A small error was made in the recycling update brochure; the city is still accepting #5 plastics in recycling collection.

How do I get an additional cart?
At this time, additional carts are not immediately available for purchase, but the City will ask interested residents to provide their contact info (name, phone number, email address, address for the additional cart) so that further information can be distributed as soon as it’s available.

Help! The lid on my new cart is defective!
Some recycling carts may have lids that do not close or may be frozen shut when delivered; please note that this is largely due to the fact that the bins have been assembled and travelled in colder weather, however, the lids will settle in time.

If you have any other questions regarding the new service and your new recycling cart, please contact Krystal at the Landfill at 204-346-6507 or Eldon, Solid Waste Department Manager, at 204-346-6532.
