The ink is now dry on a Handi-Transit service agreement that comes into effect on February 1. Starting next month, Serving Seniors Inc. will assume Handi Transit operations from the City of Steinbach.
“Having this service delivered by a local non-profit that is focused on serving the seniors population will be a long-term benefit to the service,” said Adam Thiessen, Manager, Corporate Services at the City, “Serving Seniors Inc. has a natural connection and awareness of the needs of Steinbach seniors.”
Serving Seniors Inc. will look after the dispatch, driving, and maintenance of handi transit vehicles while the City retains ownership, providing replacement vehicles as needed. The City will also provide grant funding to Serving Seniors Inc. to cover the operating deficit that comes as a result of the low fare rates.
Transportation for the mobility disadvantaged and seniors (ages 55+) is offered Monday to Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Users will still call the same number, 204-326-4055, to arrange for a ride.
Although no immediate changes are planned to the service, Serving Seniors Inc. has some exciting ideas about road trips and other fun excursions so stay tuned!
