Fire Danger Index
The City of Steinbach is currently at a Fire Danger Index of LOW (Level 1).
This means that all burning that complies with the City of Steinbach Burning By-Law 2205 is permitted.
The City of Steinbach's three-stage Fire Danger Index is used to identify the fire risk based on moisture and weather conditions. The index will be used to implement appropriate fire restrictions. The Fire Danger Index is as follows:
Level 1 (LOW)
All burning that complies with the City of Steinbach Burning By-Law 2205 is permitted.
Level 2 (HIGH)
Burning is allowed only in enclosed fire pits, fire bowls, chimineas, and other outdoor receptacles with a spark arrestor, grille or mesh covering all openings and must be under constant supervision. The use of commercial or consumer fireworks is prohibited. All current burn permits are suspended, and no new permits will be issued. Solid fuel burning appliances such as charcoal barbeques and smokers are permitted.
Level 3 (EXTREME)
A complete ban of ALL open-air fires including fires contained within enclosed fire pits and solid fuel burning appliances. Gas-burning appliances such as propane barbeques and fire tables are permitted.
Burn Permits & Burning By-Law
A burn permit is required when any open-air fires will not comply with section 3.2 of the Burning By-Law. There is no cost for a burn permit and they can be obtained by completing a burn permit application and emailing it to Steinbach Fire Department at firechief@steinbach.ca. Applications are also available at the Steinbach Fire Hall at 477 Main Street.
Fires must adhere to the provisions of the Wildfires Act, The Manitoba Controlled Crop Residue Burning Program, and ALL City of Steinbach by-laws.
Burn during daylight hours only.
Fires must not be started when winds exceed 25 kilometres per hour.
If the burn is not completed within a 2-week period after the permit is issued, the applicant must apply for a new permit.

Open-Air Fires
- Fires must be enclosed on all sides by a pit of non-combustible material.
- Smoke may not cause nuisance for neighbours or reduce visibility on a highway.
- Only unpainted or untreated wood can be used.
- Organic material may be burned in a garden or enclosure in May and October.
- A burn permit is required if fire does not comply.

Flying Lanterns
The ignition and release of flying lanterns (also known as Chinese lanterns, sky lanterns, and Kongming lanterns) is prohibited within the City of Steinbach. The sale of these products is permitted but any display shall include a sign notifying customers that they cannot be lit and released within city limits.
False Alarms
Any property owner or occupier of a premises containing a fire alarm system, where there have been more than two false alarms within the same calendar year, is liable to pay fines for each additional false alarm after the second false alarm.
