Sewer Cleaning & Inspection Program

The City completes annual sewer cleaning and televising throughout Steinbach. During the process, nearly 8000 metres of pipe are cleaned and televised.

The work is routine preventative maintenance of the sanitary sewer system. Sections to be cleaned are determined based on information gained during monthly inspections, last cleaning or televising date, and critical level of service.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cleaning and inspection program keeps the City’s sewer system operating efficiently by:

  • Helping prevent blockages and backups;
  • Removing built-up debris, such as tree roots, grease, sand and grit; and
  • Determining the condition of the sewer so the City can repair or replace sewers as necessary.

A high-pressure nozzle flushes water down the sewer. The dirt and debris are sucked up through a manhole by a large vacuum truck and taken to the Steinbach Landfill. A remotely operated video camera is then inserted into the sewer to record its condition. From the video, City staff can determine if the sewer needs any repairs or if it needs to be replaced.

Most sewers are cleaned and inspected at the same time. Sometimes, the sewer is cleaned first and then inspected within two weeks. If the City has to return to your street to inspect the sewer, you will receive another notice advising you to take the same precautions to prevent water damage.

It usually takes three to five hours to clean the sewer on each block. However, some sewers can take longer depending on their size and condition.

Yes. However, please be careful as air pressure in the sewer during cleaning and inspecting can sometimes cause water to splash out through toilets, sinks and drains. Remember to close the lids on all toilet bowls when not in use, and insert drain plugs in all sinks and bathtubs when not in use.

The City of Steinbach cleans sewers in selected areas of the city each year, usually between May and October, Monday to Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. City staff realize that the equipment is very noisy and may disturb some residents. Sometimes this cannot be avoided and we appreciate your patience as we work to maintain the City’s infrastructure.
